Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
