Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
