European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
