Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
