Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
